Meetings are held at places of  historical interest in North Louisiana, with a speaker on a historical topic.  Fall, winter and spring meetings are held annually.

Topic: Louisiana’s Kent Courtney and the Conservative Society of America

Directions:  From I-49, take the Natchitoches Exit and continue toward Natchitoches approximately 4 miles.  This road is named University Parkway.  NSU Library is at 913 University Parkway.  It is across the street from the Campus Corner.  Parking is permitted in the large parking lot next to the library building.

Dr. Charles Pellegrin, NSU Professor of History, will give a presentation on Louisiana’s Kent Courtney, a Conservative whose syndicated radio program featured discussions of current political issues during the 1960s and who donated his collection of newsletters of the Conservative Society of America and other conservative literature to NSU.  Guests will also be able to view an exhibit celebrating NSU’s 125th anniversary: “Student Life and Sports.”

Past Meetings:

Fall Meeting, 2009.  The Fall Meeting of the North Louisiana Historical Association was held on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum at Selman Field in Monroe.  Speaker for the meeting was Dr. Richard Chardkoff, Professor of History at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.  Dr. Chardkoff’s presentation, The History of Selman Field, was filled with entertaining anecdotes from his recently completed book, World War II Aerial Navigation Training & the Flyboy Heroes of Selman FieldGuests were also able to tour the museum prior to and following the meeting.

Spring Luncheon Meeting, 2009.  The spring luncheon meeting of the North Louisiana Historical Association was held on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Main Street Restaurant in Gilliam, with members of the Red River Crossroads Historical and Cultural Association serving as local hosts.  Speaker for the occasion was Dr. Alan S. Thompson, LSUS Professor of History, Emeritus.  Dr. Thompson delivered an interesting and informative talk on the history of “The North Caddo Parish Red River Region.”

Gay Means, Editor of North Louisiana History, recognized the students receiving the annual Overdyke Awards for Excellence in scholarly writing and research.  First Place Award in the Graduate Division was presented to Emily Buck of Louisiana Tech University for her paper, “The Freedom Train? Cold War Propaganda and Racial Equality in Shreveport, Louisiana, 1947-1948.”  The Second Place Award was presented to Jenna Steward of Louisiana Tech University, whose paper was entitled, “Desegregation at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, 1965-1970.”  Both students’ papers were directed by Dr. Stephen Webre of Louisiana Tech.

In the Undergraduate Division, the First Place winner was Amanda Robinson of Centenary College for her paper, “The Vets March on Centenary: Changing the Campus from 1945-1950.”  Second Place was won by Lesley Ragsdale of Centenary College for her paper, “Fighting a Different Enemy: The 1945 Red River Flood and a Network of Destruction.”  Dr. Samuel C. Shepherd, Jr. of Centenary directed both these students’ papers.

Receiving the Max Bradbury Award for the best article appearing in North Louisiana History during the preceding year was Ann Youngblood Mulhearn of the University of Tennessee at Martin for her article, “Dangerous Liaisons,” appearing in the Spring/Summer 2008 issue of the journal.

Winter Meeting, 2009.  The Winter Meeting of the North Louisiana Historical Association was held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at the Lincoln Parish Museum in Ruston.  Mary Sumrall Emory, curator of the Museum, welcomed guests and introduced an informative video on the history of Ruston and surrounding area.  The Lincoln Parish Museum is located in the Kidd-Davis House, built in 1885 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
